Day 3(Monday)

We went to do some door to door evangelizing up in the hollers this morning. The houses here are pretty spread out, so we get to do a lot of walking on the winding roads going up and down the mountains. Many of the folks here love to talk and are happy to see us walking up to their doors. The majority of them know of the Freeda Harris Center and talk very highly of Pastor Greg and his wife. It’s always really cool to get into discussions with the individuals here because after just a few minutes they open up and start talking about themselves; things like how long they’ve lived here and their previous careers or hobbies.

Love you all!!!

Day 2(Sunday)

Devotional time in the morning

Sunday morning we divided into groups and went to five different churches.  Here’s our special Al and Pastor Nick!  It was great, Allan got up and shared a little at Nick’s church.  They were all so precious and so welcoming.  And the worship was amazing!!!  Like seriously guys, we sung Amazing Grace bluegrass style!!! 😀

Al and John–John is a little camera shy, haha 😛

Hannah and Al getting ready at the registration table

Jim and Jim setting up for VBS.

Maddie, Abby, and Tina serving dinner.

Our dear team leader Alex has done an AWESOME job grilling up all sorts of yummy food for us!

The gentleman in the ball cap, Russel came down to help grill, what a blessing it was to have him and it was so great to see his heart in serving!

As the folks ate at the cookout, we spent time fellowshipping with them, what a sweet time it was.

The kids play basketball with Isaac!  What a great young man.

Donnie and Alice!!!!

Anna, Gayla, and Lindsay spent awhile sharing with this kind lady, Vicky(Isaac’s mom) about the Lord and shared our need for Him–please pray for her salvation.

And lastly….here we are uploading the blog 😀

Day 2(Sunday)

Howdy yawl!!!!

Today was a wonderful, blessed day in the Lord.  We hosted a community cookout.  It was a wonderful time as people came from the surrounding hollers for a time of food and fellowship.  We also pre-registered kidos for the VBS.

So, a quick testimony of our God’s greatness and mercy:  A bunch of the kids were outside playing, and I noticed a young boy sitting by himself so I went over and sat down with him and we started talking.  He told me his name, Jacob, and he started telling me about how he is lonely because his dad isn’t around that often because of work or he’s always out with his friends.  I prayed with him and for his dad, then we kept talking and it turned to talking about church and bible stories, so I asked him if He knew about Jesus and the gospel.  He only knew a very little, so I shared the gospel with him.  I walked him thru some verses in Romans, I told him because we are all sinners, and God demands perfection, and since we all have fallen short if we die in our sins, we will be eternally separated from Him in hell.  Then I shared the good news with him that God so loved the world He sent His only Son that whosoever believes in Him will have everlasting life.  I told him God desires all to turn to Him, to turn from their sin and to Him, surrendering their life to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  And He will wash their sin away and give them everlasting life!  As I spoke to him, I could tell he was really listening and he understood it.  So when I was done, I asked him if he understood, he said yes and he was really quiet and pondering what he had just heard.  I asked Jacob if he was ready to surrender his life to the Lord and he said yes, I am!  So we prayed together and right there this sweet boy gave his heart and life to Jesus!  It was awesome!  We gave him a Gideon bible and wrote his name and date in the back….God is just so good!  All praise and glory go to Him and Him alone!

Here are a few prayer requests we have:

Our dear brother Allen’s dad is having some health problems, his arms and legs are swelling up, please pray for him and the family.  His name is Anthony.  He loves the Lord, just pray for the Lord to be with him during this time, and with his family; also for strength, comfort, and peace during this time.

Also please remember Jacob in your prayers, pray the Lord would keep him, grew him, and bring a spiritual leader into his life.   Please pray for his younger brother Connor to come to know the Lord and pray for his Dad, his name is Craig.  Please pray that God would restore his heart to his boys, that he would surrender his life to the Lord and be the spiritual head in his family God wants him to be.

Please pray for an older gentleman, Jay, he’s in the hospital, he has black lung, please lift him up and his wife Nancy.  They are believers.  John Wallace got to go see him and minister to him and his daughter.  Please also pray for their son Jay junior, that if he hasn’t fully surrendered his life to the Lord, that God would save him.  And that the Lord will just be with that family during this rough time.

And also, please just pray God will continue to pour his blessing and spirit upon us as we continue thru our week!  God has been so faithful and we know He will continue to be.  All glory and honor belong to Him!  Thank you our dear brothers and sisters!!  Love you guys!!!!!

Day 1(Saturday)

Sooooo today we arrived in Kentucky!!!  Praise the Lord we got here safe and sound—God is good!  We arrived around 5 p.m., got unpacked, some of us went out shopping to the nearest Wal-Mart (about half an hour away, not bad at all) for some things we needed(just like 4 carts full of coffee and ice cream….kidding, sorta 😉 ), we set up for VBS, unloaded groceries, had dinner, spent some time in prayer and worship, and now we are headed to bed.

Tomorrow we will split up and go to five different churches.  Then we will have a community cookout later!!!  Looking forward to that, really hoping people come out so we can tell them about our VBS and share the love of Jesus with them.

We ask for your prayers as our week gets started, that God would strengthen each one of us in our inner man and fill us afresh with His spirit—Amen!

Thank you all for following along with us on the journey, we cannot wait to see what God has in store!  What an awesome and good God we serve!

Love in Christ to all of you!

Team Meeting and Cook Out

Today we had a long, fun day together in preparation for our time in KY.

Ben and Abby lead us in a time of praise and worship before we broke off into smaller groups to prepare for VBS.

Some of the team cuts out paper snowflakes in prep for our ‘Operation Arctic’ themed VBS.

And some of the team rehearsed the play that will be part of the VBS.

And of course….we ate! 🙂  We all are pretty good at that, huh?!  A shout out to our grand team leader, Alex for his fabulous job at grilling up that chicken and hamburgers!

And lastly…but definitely not leastly…our dear team member Maddie sleeps the day away while the rest of us were hard at work 🙂  Haha, kidding 😀

Thanks to you all for a great day together!

God Bless you for your faithful work in bringing this together!

Love in Christ,

KY Team Meeting–Evangelism Class

Jim and Jacob give a run thru on how a witnessing encounter might go.

What a blessed time we have had together as we seek to be equipped and prepared to go out for the gospel’s sake!

Remember Paul’s words in 2 Timothy :

7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
8  Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me His prisoner; but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God,
9 who has saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,
10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.
12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. (2 Timothy 1:7-12)

And let us all remember to constantly be lifting each other up in prayer.  A reminder of what it says in James :

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:16)

Blessings to you all!

Introduction Post

Hi everyone!

So a little bit of backround about what this mission trip is about…CC Fredricksburg has been heading up this mission’s trip for years now, this is CC Manassas’ second time going with the CC Fred group.  The area of Kentucky we are going to is in Pike County, near Elkhorn City, a former coal-mining town.  I say former, because years ago now, the coal mine shut down, causing everyone to lose their jobs and means of income.  This town is now very poor, and there are no jobs to be had in the immediate area, you have to go to one of the surrounding cities, like Elkhorn City, or Pikeville.  Drugs are a major problem in this area, and the families we will be ministering to are often times falling apart, and their lives’ are in shambles, not just physically, but spiritually.

So what do we do when we go?  Well, for the spring trip (CC Fred also goes in Dec. for a couple days) we stay 1 week, Saturday to Saturday, this year April 8-15.  Monday through Friday from 4pm to 7pm we have a VBS for the local kids.  This is really a big part of what we do there, and its amazing to be with these kids, most of whom are in messed up family situations, whose parents are either absent, or involved in drugs, alcohol, etc.  So, its great to be able to pour into these sweet kids for a week, loving them, sharing the gospel with them, and just having fun with them.

Another big part of what we do is door-to-door evangelism, going up into the hollers, inviting people to come to the VBS, and sharing the gospel.  Also this year some of the team will be offering discipleship for believers, so inviting people to that as well.  The people we encounter are for the most part, very hospitable and kind, often times inviting us into the house.

Yet another ministry we do while in KY, is outreaches to different places, this year a Veterans home, Drug rehab center and a homeless shelter.  We provide lunch, do worship, and someone often shares a testimony, or a message, then we just fellowship with them, pray with them, and share the gospel.

So that’s a summary of our mission for Kentucky this April.  We hope you all enjoy seeing pictures and getting updates throughout our week there, as well as the weeks leading up to it.  For us, beforehand, aside from preparations for all the material things, VBS prep, food prep, etc., its also a time for our team to grow together in our walks, and individually in our walks…to fill up before we go and pour out.  Its amazing to see how God knits our hearts together as a team, and we all get to know each other pretty well after being together 24/7 for a whole week!

Our ‘living conditions’ for the week is a gymnasium graciously given for our use that week by a Minister there in KY, so we all sprawl our air mattresses around the floor and some of us don’t sleep while others snore away!  J  But there is a small kitchen put to good use while we’re there. (And yes, bathrooms too.) The bedding gets packed up every morning since we also hold VBS in the Freeda Harris Baptist Center, as the gymnasium is called.

Anyways, we would very much appreciate everyone’s prayers for the gospel to go forth and also for the body of believers in KY to come together with us in reaching out to their community.  God Bless!
